The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is looking to test security platforms and architectures to secure Internet of Things (IoT) devices from cyberattacks in the energy sector, according to an upcoming Federal Register notice.
The notice, set to be finalized tomorrow, tasks the National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence (NCCoE) with understanding available products and developing a use case for energy plants and IoT security. Interested parties will enter a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement with the NCCoE to conduct further research using their products.
“The objective of this use case is to provide an architecture that can be referenced and develop guidance for securing [industrial IoT] in commercial- and/or utility-scale distributed energy resource environments,” NIST states.
Among the products that NIST is looking to test are access control techniques, data integrity technologies, network monitoring tools, and infrastructure components that can improve security. In its larger Securing the IIoT (Industrial IoT) project, NIST has set desired solution characteristics that solutions should aim to align with.
Interested parties can join the project from October 8 until at least November 7.
