Peter Ranks has left his post as the deputy CIO for information enterprise at the Defense Department (DoD) to return to the CIA.
“Under his leadership, we’ve made great advances in execution of the DoD Cloud Strategy and development of the software modernization approach while supporting the entirety of the DoD workforce with remote work capabilities during the pandemic – most notably, the work he led on Commercial Virtual Remote. We are thankful for all Pete has done to move the Department forward,” said DoD CIO Dana Deasy in a statement.
Ranks, who left the DoD at the end of last month, had served as deputy CIO for nearly two years. Before joining the Pentagon, Ranks served with the CIA’s Directorate of Science and Technology where he was responsible for technical intelligence collection and technical analysis in support of the Intelligence Community’s (IC) counter-proliferation objectives. Prior to this role, Ranks held a number of leadership assignments in the Information Technology field to include a leading role in the IC’s adoption of cloud computing.
Deasy also confirmed that Danielle Metz will serve as acting deputy CIO for information enterprise. He said, “I have full confidence in her ability to continue delivering real outcomes in support of digital modernization and the warfighter.”
Metz is a member of the Senior Executive Service and before assuming her role as acting deputy CIO, Metz held a detailed assignment for the Executive Office of the President Office of Science and Technology Policy. She has also served as the deputy director of DoD Information Modernization in the Office of the Deputy DoD CIO for Information Enterprise and served as the DoD CIO lead for the Joint Regional Security Stack effort. Before joining the Office of the DoD CIO, Metz served six years with the Defense Information Systems Agency.
