The Pentagon’s Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) is testing and getting ready to deploy a new artificial intelligence matching application aimed at finding talented military personnel who can take on short-term assignments supporting a variety of Defense Department (DoD) projects.
The new app – dubbed GigEagle – is the product of a partnership between Eightfold AI and Carahsoft Technology who won a government grant to support the project.
The application aims for the utility of many well-known smartphone applications. “Think of Uber, Airbnb, these are types of platforms that take advantage of knowledge or underutilized assets and allows people to endeavor them as gigs,” said Col. Christopher Johnson, U.S. Air Force Reserve.
The projects that are being showcased on the new app aim to identify “undiscoverable expertise” within DoD. According to United States Space Force Chief of Staff Gen. John Raymond, the app increases “the visibility of Reserve and Guard personnel who possess specialized skills, unique experiences, and high potential will enable the department to better meet its strategic objectives.”
GigEagle is currently in its testing phase, and can only be accessed via invitation, but DIU is looking to a full release later this year.
