The Council of the Inspectors General on Integrity and Efficiency (CIGIE) has announced the election of Allison Lerner as the group’s new chairperson, effective in January.
She is inspector general (IG) at the National Science Foundation (NSF) and has been CIGIE’s vice chairperson since 2015, in addition to serving as co-chair of the group’s Suspension and Debarment and Research Misconduct Working Groups. Lerner succeeds Michael Horowitz, who is IG at the Justice Department. Both Lerner and Horowitz will remain in IG posts at their respective agencies.
CIGIE was established in 2008 by the Inspector General Reform Act as an independent Federal entity within the executive branch. The council, which includes 75 Federal IGs, aims to “address integrity, economy, and effectiveness issues” that transcend individual government agencies, and develop policies and standards for a well-trained and highly workforce in Federal IG offices.
The council said that Lerner will appoint Mark Lee Greenblatt as the group’s vice chairperson. He is IG at the Interior Department, and previously was executive director of CIGIE. Lerner also intends to appoint Horowitz chair of the Pandemic Response Accountability Committee, for which he has served as acting chair since April 2020.
