On August 22, President Trump signed into law the Creating Advanced Streamlined Electronic Services for Constituents Act (CASES Act) which will modernize the inquiry process for constituents by creating electronic forms to improve access and efficiency to Federal services and agencies.
The CASES Act will require the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) to issue guidance on electronic consent and access forms no later than one year from the bill’s enactment. The guidance will require agencies to accept electronic identity proofing and authentication, as well as create a template for electronic consent and access forms to be posted on each agency’s website.
“The CASES Act will make it easier for them and all Americans to interact with their government when they need help, and it will help members of Congress better serve their constituents,” Sen. Rob Portman, R-Ohio, said in a May press release. Sen. Portman introduced the Senate version of the CASES Act with Sen. Tom Carper, D-Del.
“As elected officials, making sure that we can help our constituents navigate the federal government easily and in a timely way is one of our most important responsibilities,” Senator Carper said at the time. “This bipartisan, bicameral bill helps to ensure that elected officials like myself can be even more effective advocates for our constituents by modernizing our constituent services process.”
