The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and Defense Department’s (DoD) Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) announced that they began a strategic partnership Aug. 12 to aid the VA in its supply chain management modernization efforts.

The partnership grants VA networks access to DLA’s worldwide acquisition system so that it can procure a broader range of supplies, such as medical and surgical tools, cleaning supplies and equipment, construction materials and equipment, and other items the VA uses to aid veterans.

“The adoption of a single health care logistics system by VA and DoD highlights the commitment of both organizations to improve military and veteran health care by increasing the access and quality of care they receive,” VA Secretary Robert Wilkie said. “This is a huge step forward in our efforts to transform VA into a modern, high-performing organization by simplifying operations and leveraging DoD’s supply chain system to support our veterans.”

Since the agreement combines VA and DoD supplies and resources, a VA press release said that the partnership should create a “centralized ordering system for VA, reducing risk, waste, fraud and abuse in purchasing medical equipment and supplies.”

Lt. Gen. Darrell K. Williams echoed that sentiment, adding that DoD is proud to aid the VA on behalf of veterans.

“Leveraging economies of scale, like the ones outlined in this agreement, help us reduce costs for the military services and other government partners like VA,” Williams said.
