Operational Readiness at DoD Depends on Predictive Maintenance

Predictive maintenance enabled the U.S. Army to detect a nose gearbox malfunction on an AH-64 Apache helicopter that could have failed within a few hours, according to a December 2022 Government Accountability Office (GAO) report. Early detection prevented an accident that could have caused the loss of two personnel and the aircraft.

Using predictive maintenance, an Air Force contractor pinpointed the location of a shorted wire that maintenance personnel could not find in the airframe of a B-1 bomber, saving hundreds of hours of additional effort.
