The White House said March 26 that President Biden plans to nominate Brett Holmgren to become assistant secretary of State for Intelligence and Research.

Holmgren was the deputy of nominations for the Biden-Harris transition team and brings both White House and private-sector experience to the table. Before joining the transition team, Holmgren was the vice president and chief technology risk officer at Capital One.

Before joining Capitol One’s Technology Risk Management team, Holmgren worked in the Obama-Biden White House as senior advisor to the assistant to the President for Homeland Security and Counterterrorism from June 2014  to July 2015. He then served as special assistant to the President and senior director for intelligence programs from July 2015 to January 2017.

Holmgren also has an extensive national security background. In addition to serving in the White House, he worked at the Department of Defense (DoD) for over a year, on President Obama’s National Security Council from 2011-2013, and also spent nearly eight years as an analyst in the CIA and Defense Intelligence Agency.
