The United States is leading the world in the development and use of AI with China close behind, according to a new report.
The new report from the Center of Data Innovation, analyzed the AI capabilities of the United States, European Union, and China across six categories: talent, research, development, hardware, adoption, and data.
The report found that out of 100 total points, the United States led with 44.6 points, China had 32.0 points, and the EU had 23.3 points. However, the report warned that the Chinese government has made AI a top priority and “will eventually close the gap with the United States.”
According to the report, the United States will need to develop and fund “a more proactive national AI strategy” to keep the lead in the global AI race.
“The United States needs to implement additional policies to maintain its lead,” the report reads. “It can start with more active support for AI research and deployment […] But research is not enough,” the report said. “Deployment drives innovation. As of 2020, less than half of Federal agencies had used AI tools. As such, the Federal government should also focus more on using AI to achieve both individual agencies’ missions and big national goals such as dramatically improving drug development and health outcomes.”
