The U.S. Navy is set to announce appointments to several senior IT leadership positions next week, said Thomas Modly, who began performing the duties of the Navy Secretary in July, at the Professional Services Council’s (PSC) Tech Trends Conference today.
Modley said in August that the Navy planned to restructure its CIO position to have it serve as a special assistant to the Navy Secretary, and to oversee four new directorates to be led by new appointments to the positions of CTO, Chief Data Officer (CDO), Chief of Cyber Strategy, and Digital Strategy Officer.
Speaking today at the PSC event, Modly said he would announce appointments to the four new directorate positions “in the next week or so,” adding, “I’m super excited.” He declined to elaborate on the identities of the four, but said, “we’ve gone out to the private sector for some of these.”
Modly, who became Navy Undersecretary in 2017 and has served as its CIO and Chief Management Officer, said that the CIO position was “too broad for me,” and led to creation of the four directorate positions.
He said the new appointees will be located in the “E-ring” of the Pentagon – which has outside window views and is generally the province of more senior officials – not only because that location is “symbolically important,” but to also locate the new positions close to Navy leadership.
