The Department of Treasury, along with its IRS component, is moving toward a requirement that agency leadership work more than half of their hours within traditional office settings.
According to an email sent to IRS employees, the agency will be requiring more on-site work by IRS leadership around the Washington, D.C., area to adhere to the 50 percent onsite government-wide directive issued by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) last year.
“We determined the change announced today will affect only one specific geographic area of IRS operations in and around Washington, D.C. The most appropriate place to increase our trend toward on-site work centers on where IRS leadership is located in the greater Washington area,” stated IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel in the email.
“Washington is the logical choice for several reasons. It is home to the IRS headquarters, and it has a high concentration of not just IRS leadership but also senior professionals that play a central role in policy decisions. The focus on the Washington area is also consistent with how other agencies are responding to the directive, where a larger number of people have been working onsite at many locations,” added Werfel.
Regardless of the change, the commissioner said the technological mission and goals of the agency will remain the same.
“Our top priority, regardless of where employees are located at any point in time, will continue to be meeting our goals of serving taxpayers, ensuring tax compliance and maintaining our vital technology and operations,” stated Werfel.
