Cybersecurity experts are gearing up to cut an illuminating path through the tangled cybersecurity threats and solutions landscape at Symantec’s Government Symposium on Oct. 30 at the Marriott Marquis in Washington, D.C.

The event, which will attract hundreds of cyber professionals across government and industry, features a program with more than 50 speakers. Based on a sneak peek into the discussion themes that several speakers are planning to tackle at next week’s event, attendees are sure to come away armed with the freshest perspectives on cybersecurity challenges and how to address them.

Don Maclean, Chief Cyber Security Technologist at DLT Solutions, told MeriTalk that he’ll speak to the burgeoning footprint of cyber threats and their effects on society.

“No longer a purely technical pursuit, cybersecurity now affects foreign policy and relations, requires a broad knowledge and understanding of human psychology, and forces us to confront the devil’s bargain technology has created:  for each advance, a new danger arises,” he said.

Cindy Donaldson, President of the Global Resilience Foundation, said she will speak to the enduring threat from ransomware attacks, which she said “continues to be an extremely disruptive form of attack” even as government and industry race to keep up with ever-more sophisticated attack methods.

She plans to discuss the best ways to mitigate risk from ransomware attacks, and emphasizes, “At a minimum, always patch your systems and join and participate in an information sharing community.”

And that’s on top of the up-to-the-minute insights expected from major Federal government security leaders including: William Evanina of the Office of the Director of National Intelligence; Jeanette Manfra and Bob Kolasky of the Department of Homeland Security; Thomas Hicks of the U.S. Election Assistance Commission; Kevin Cox of DHS; Ed Wilson of the Defense Department; and Federal CIO Suzette Kent.
