Keith Jones, the State Department’s chief information officer (CIO), will be stepping down from his post after 16 months to return to the private sector, a department spokesperson confirmed to MeriTalk.
Glenn Miller, the department’s principal deputy CIO, will step in as acting CIO until the State Department names a new executive.
During his time as CIO, Jones established technology strategic direction and provided oversight for $2.4 billion of technology programs across the State Department.
“CIO Keith A. Jones has elected to return to the private sector, after over 38 years of service with the Federal government. The effective date of Jones’ departure will be Friday, June 17, 2022,” a department spokesperson said.
Before becoming CIO at the State Department, Jones spent 15 years working for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), serving in technology leadership roles at the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services and at the Immigration and Customs Enforcement directorates.
After leaving DHS, Jones became President and CEO of the Edgewater Group DC. He also served as a principal consultant to Deep Water Point. Jones also served as a strategic advisor for the Government Technology & Services Coalition, where he assisted large and small businesses in acquisition capabilities in support of government initiatives.
