In the midst of dealing with the fallout from the Russian cyberattack that used SolarWinds software to breach the networks of thousands of the firm’s customers, SolarWinds has hired former Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency Director Chris Krebs and his new cybersecurity consulting firm as an independent consultant.
Krebs, who was fired by President Trump after delivering an election security update proclaiming the 2020 election to be the safest in history, has since moved on and started his own firm with Alex Stamos, the founder of the Stanford Internet Observatory. Stamos has also led security teams as Facebook and Yahoo.
“Armed with what we have learned of this attack, we are also reflecting on our own security practices and seeking opportunities to enhance our posture and policies. We have brought in the expertise of Chris Krebs and Alex Stamos to assist in this review and provide best-in-class guidance on our journey to evolve into an industry leading secure software development company,” a SolarWinds company spokesperson said.
SolarWinds also welcomed a new CEO this week, according to a Jan. 7 blog post. Krebs and Stamos will assist SolarWinds in reviewing its security practices and further understand the hack that, according to CISA, has exposed fewer than 10 Federal agencies, along with the U.S. Courts record system.
