Senate Commerce Committee Approves Broadband, CIO Bills

The Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation approved four new pieces of IT-related legislation during today’s committee markup.

The Committee approved by voice vote:

• 893, The Secure 5G and Beyond Act, which would require the President to “develop a strategy to ensure the security of next-generation mobile telecommunications systems and infrastructure in the United States and to assist allies and strategic partners in maximizing the security of next-generation mobile telecommunications systems, infrastructure, and software.”
• 1625, The United States 5G Leadership Act, which is intended to “promote the deployment of commercial fifth-generation mobile networks and the sharing of information with communications providers in the United States regarding security risks to the networks of those providers.”
• 1822, The Broadband Deployment Accuracy and Technological Availability (DATA) Act, which would require the Federal Communications Commission to “issue rules relating to the collection of data with respect to the availability of broadband services.”
• 1858, The Consumer Product Safety Commission Chief Information Office Parity Act, which is designed to “ensure the Chief Information Office of the Consumer Product Safety Commission has a significant role in decisions related to information technology.”
