Rep. Gerry Connolly, D-Va., welcomed news reports today that the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) was ceasing efforts to pursue its proposed merger with the General Services Administration (GSA) – a Trump administration proposal that the congressmen has opposed since it was first floated in 2019.
According to a report from Federal News Network, OPM Acting Director Michael Rigas said in an internal agency email that OPM was no longer working on the proposed merger, due in part to opposition from Congress.
“OPM has wasted time and resources on this quixotic mission that clearly had no support from Congress, no legal grounding and made no sense,” said Rep. Connolly, who chairs the House Government Operations Subcommittee.
“Despite this victory, Congress cannot lose focus on OPM’s proposed Schedule F change, which is an assault on the civil service and should join the OPM merger in the trash bin,” the congressman said.
Rep. Connolly is helping to lead the charge against implementation of President Trump’s executive order earlier this month that orders the creation of a new Schedule F classification for policy-involved Federal employees that would make it easier to hire and fire them.
