President-elect Joe Biden is continuing to establish top leadership for the incoming administration by announcing plans to nominate key members of his economic team, including Neera Tanden as Director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB).
“As we get to work to control the virus, this is the team that will deliver immediate economic relief for the American people during this economic crisis and help us build our economy back better than ever,” Biden said in a press release. “This team is comprised of respected and tested groundbreaking public servants who will help the communities hardest hit by COVID-19 and address the structural inequities in our economy.”
Subject to Senate approval, Tanden would serve as the first woman of color and first South-Asian American to lead OMB. Tanden is the current president of the Center for American Progress – a Washington D.C.-based think tank – and has had roles in the presidential campaigns of Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.
Tanden also was a senior adviser for health reform at the Department of Health and Human Services in connection with developing policies and provisions for the Affordable Care Act.
“President-elect Biden and I have said that our top priorities upon entering the White House are getting this virus under control and opening our economy responsibly,” Vice President-elect Kamala Harris said in the press release. “The outstanding economic team that President-elect Biden is bringing together will help us deliver on our commitment.”
In building out his economic team, Biden will also nominate: former Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen for Secretary of Treasury; Wally Adeyemo as Deputy Secretary of Treasury; and Cecilia Rouse as Chair of the Council of Economic Advisers. He will appoint Jared Bernstein and Heather Boushey as members of the Council of Economic Advisers.
