The Technology Modernization Board within the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) announced the newest round of Technology Modernization Fund (TMF) awards on Monday totaling $23.5 million for proposals from the Department of Labor (DOL), the Department of Agriculture (USDA), and the General Services Administration (GSA).
“The proposals, funded under the Technology Modernization Fund (TMF), exemplify a commitment to improving citizen services, modernizing legacy technology, lowering operational costs, and creating a secure environment,” the board said in its announcement.
The projects include:
- $15 million to GSA for Application Modernization Integrating Flexible Architecture. The project aims to address the 88 GSA applications in need of modernization by “conduct[ing] a pilot for full stack application modernizations and transform[ing] 10-15 percent of GSA systems that are on legacy proprietary software to open source technologies,” the TMF website notes.
- $5 million to USDA for Infrastructure Optimization and Cloud Adoption. “USDA worked with the GSA Cloud Centers of Excellence (CoE) to develop their approach and will focus on avoiding duplication of IT components by using a shared services cloud platform model,” the TMF website states.
- $3.5 million to DoL for Labor Certification Process Digitization. Currently, the department must use special security paper to print labor certifications and mail them overnight them to employers. “The system improvements will enable the Department of Labor to issue a Labor Certification securely and electronically to employer applicants through an ‘E-Certification’ document,” the TMF website states.
“The Technology Modernization Fund plays a key role toward the President’s Management Agenda’s IT modernization efforts,” said Margaret Weichert, Deputy Director of OMB. “I am thrilled to see the Fund’s continued success in allowing federal agencies to modernize their projects as this Administration strives to provide the best quality services to taxpayers.”
The awards were chosen by the seven members of the Technology Modernization Board, chaired by Federal CIO Suzette Kent.
“Technology is a key enabler for Government and we must make sure our technology capabilities are modern, secure and resilient,” said Kent. “Today’s announcement continues to illustrate how Agencies are leveraging MGT Act to accelerate their transformation journeys.”
The board announced $45 million of TMF awards earlier this year from an FY 2018 funding authority totaling $100 million.
