The National Association of State Chief Information Officers (NASCIO) previewed the results of its biannual state CISO survey during a webinar on Tuesday, revealing the continued growth of cybersecurity staff among the states, and continuing resource challenges. The study found that 30 percent of states had CISOs reporting to governors on a monthly basis–a dramatic shift from 2014 when no CISOs were reporting to governors. The organization also reported full-time employee rolls in CISO offices are growing; Michael Roling, Missouri’s CISO, described how his department has expanded from 5 to 21 full-time employees. NASCIO also revealed that the main challenges of CISOs in 2018 were salary rates and pay grade structures, which were also the top challenges in 2016. The full study will be released in October at NASCIO’s annual conference.
