With the rising number of cyber threats, the Biden administration is working to harmonize cybersecurity efforts across the public and private sectors. Here are just a few of the key policy points in play:
The White House’s Office of the National Cyber Director (ONCD) released its much-anticipated National Cybersecurity Strategy in March, followed by its very own National Cybersecurity Strategy Implementation Plan released in July.
Additionally, the White House released a request for information (RFI) on cybersecurity regulatory harmonization and regulatory reciprocity in July, seeking input from stakeholders to understand existing challenges with regulatory overlap and inconsistency.
The Department of Defense (DoD) also unveiled an unclassified version of its own 2023 Cybersecurity Strategy in September, months after a classified version of the plan was shared with Congress. The DoD’s strategy calls on the Pentagon’s cyber workforce to use offensive cyber operations to frustrate and disrupt adversaries – like the Peoples Republic of China (PRC) – in cyberspace to minimize threats to the United States.
The Biden administration clearly has a range of efforts underway to respond to escalating cyber threats, but as U.S. Air Force Deputy Chief Information Officer (DCIO) Winston Beauchamp said recently, the number one thing agencies can do to improve their cybersecurity posture is to modernize their IT architecture.
