Clyburn was nominated to the Federal Communications Commission by President Barack Obama, served from 2009 to 2018, and was acting FCC chair from May 20, 2013, through Nov. 4, 2013. In a press release the Benton Foundation said, “While at the FCC, Clyburn was a champion of diversity in media ownership, an advocate for the reform of Inmate Calling Services, and a staunch defender of a free and open internet.” Currently, Clyburn is an Open Society Foundations Leadership in Government Fellow.
