The Department of Labor (DoL) has tapped its Deputy Chief Information Officer (CIO) Louis Charlier to serve in the dual-hatted role of chief AI officer (CAIO), a department spokesperson confirmed to MeriTalk today.
The move comes as several agencies begin to designate CAIOs in accordance with President Biden’s recent executive order on AI and the Office of Management and Budget’s (OMB) corresponding draft guidance for AI use in the Federal government.
“As CAIO, the OMB memo outlines his primary role to coordinate the Department of Labor’s use of AI, promote AI innovation, and manage risks from the use of AI,” the spokesperson said in an email. “Responsibilities include serving as the Labor Department’s senior advisor for AI, identifying and advocating for the appropriate and responsible use of AI, and conducting risk assessments and oversight of AI to confirm compliance with the OMB memo.”
Charlier has served as DoL’s deputy CIO since 2006.
“The draft OMB memo calls on the CAIO to have senior level authority to engage regularly with other agency leadership, as well as significant expertise in AI,” the department said. “Charlier has more than three decades of transformational IT experience, including 17 years at the Department of Labor where he leads emerging technology initiatives, including automation and IT modernization efforts.”
