Kevin Smith has taken over as CIO of the Federal Housing Finance Agency in Jan. 2021, according to his LinkedIn page.

Smith has a wide range of Federal experience, having served for five years as the CIO of the U.S. Census Bureau and six years with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office as Deputy CIO for three years followed by CISO for three years.

As CIO of the Census Bureau, Smith oversaw a breadth of IT initiatives. Most recently, the Bureau piloted a data modernization training project to “modernize, grow, and manage data analysis techniques in a coordinated and informed way” at the department.

The Census Bureau also began it’s 2020 Decennial Census in January of 2020, which has primarily been conducted online as the COVID-19 pandemic has persisted over the past year. Smith helped launch the Census Enterprise Data Lake (EDL) initiative which will provide big-data processing capabilities to “fulfill petabyte-scale data management and analytics while satisfying security and privacy requirements and controlling costs.”

“The 2020 census is a massive undertaking to ensure that everyone living in the United States is counted,” Smith told MeriTalk at the time. “The Enterprise Data Lake enables us to efficiently process the vast amounts of data we anticipate generating in 2020 via massively parallel processing and taking advantage of cloud-based infrastructure.”
