Keith Nakasone, the General Service Administration’s (GSA) IT Category Deputy Assistant Commissioner, will step down from his post on June 1, GSA confirmed to MeriTalk. In his place, Cheryl Thornton-Cameron will step into his role in an acting capacity.
Nakasone boasts 32 years of government experience and has been at GSA since 2017. In his post he oversaw over 7000 contracts worth over $30 billion per year, Nakasone says on his LinkedIn.
Earlier this year, he noted GSA is looking for feedback on its cloud technology acquisition strategy and, separately, is looking into a cybersecurity certification model similar to the Department of Defense’s (DoD) Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) program.
Prior to his time at GSA, Nakasone spent three years at the Federal Communications Commission as a senior procurement executive where he was responsible for the enterprise acquisition center for all procurements and acquisitions.
Nakasone also bookended a year-long stop at DoD with two stints at the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA). His first stint at DISA saw him spend over 16 years at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii as a deputy for DISA’s Defense Information Technology Contracting Organization (DITCO) post in the Pacific. After a stop at DoD, he returned to DISA in 2014 for a year-long stop in Fort Meade, Md., as the technical director for DISA’s Procurement Directorate.
Nakasone’s next step is expected to come in the private sector. Thornton-Cameron is currently GSA’s executive director for Acquisition in the ITC office.
