Marine Corp. Lt. Gen. Michael Groen, the recently installed director of the Defense Department’s (DoD) Joint Artificial Intelligence Center (JAIC), explained his vision for JAIC 2.0 in an address to reporters on Nov. 24, and what people should know about DoD’s AI aims going forward.
Groen said that JAIC 2.0, at its core, is an effort to accelerate the adoption of AI across every aspect of the agency’s warfighting and business operations.
“While the JAIC will continue to develop AI solutions, we’re working in parallel to enable a broad range of customers across the department,” Groen said. “We can’t achieve scale without having a broader range of participants in the integration of AI.”
Groen made note of a renewed focus on the Joint Common Foundation (JCF) and the DevSecOps platform.
“It’s a resource for all, but especially for disadvantaged users who don’t have the infrastructure and the tech expertise to do it themselves,” the new director said.
In terms of the AI vision for the department going forward, Groen said he wants the department to help people “visualize what AI means across the department and what an AI use case looks like.”
“This is kind of the broad visualization that includes support and enabling capabilities, but it extends all the way to warfighting decision-making that it’s necessary, right?” Groen said. “It will make us more effective, more efficient.”
