Nine new members of the Health Information Technology Standards Committee (HITSC) and the Health Information Technology Policy Committee (HITPC) were named last week by U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Sylvia M. Burwell.
The HITSC makes recommendations to the National Coordinator for Health IT on the standards, implementation, specifications, and certification of electronic health data. The committee also assesses the policy recommendations of the HITPC.
The HITPC makes recommendations to the National Coordinator for Health IT on a policy framework for developing a national health information infrastructure. The committee is required by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) to make recommendations in eight specific areas, ranging from standards to certifications.
The two committees were created through the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act to provide opportunity for stakeholders and the public to give direct input to HHS on health IT.
The new members of these committees are:

- Aaron Miri, chief information officer and vice president of government relations, Imprivata; privacy and security representative
HITSC
- Rajesh Dash, professor of pathology, Duke University School of Medicine; ancillary health care worker representative
- Kay Eron, general manager, heath IT & medical devices, Intel; purchaser/employer representative
- Peter Johnson, retired chief information officer; technical expertise representative
- Kyle Meadors, president, Drummond Group; technical expertise, HIT representative
- Terrence O’Malley, geriatrician, Massachusetts General Hospital; technical expertise, long-term care representative
- Andrey Ostrovsky, chief executive officer/co-founder, Care at Hand; technical expertise, small innovative provider representative
- Wanmei Ou, director of product strategy in precision medicine, Oracle; technical expertise, HIT representative
- Larry Wolf, principal, Strategic Health Network; technical expertise representative
