The First Responder Network Authority (FirstNet) recently opened a new laboratory at its headquarters in Boulder, Colo.
The FirstNet Innovation and Test Lab will serve as a “plug and play” center so that FirstNet and its future private industry partner can test public safety features, devices, and applications. After testing the technology, the devices will be deployed on the Nationwide Public Safety Broadband Network. Mike Poth, CEO of FirstNet, stated that the lab was opened ahead of schedule and under budget, according to a press release issued on Nov. 9.
FirstNet researchers will also use the lab to test the validation of the network and services related to public safety broadband technologies. According to the press release, the lab is fully equipped with all the utilities needed to test quality of service, priority, pre-emption, and other mission-critical applications.
“When first responders are racing to help in disasters and emergencies, they need communications tools that are tested and proven to work,” said Jeff Bratcher, FirstNet’s Chief Technology Officer. “This lab will help FirstNet and our future partner ensure that public safety features, devices, and applications run properly on the network and are ready for first responders to use.”
