Federal employees are more engaged and satisfied in their jobs in 2024, with employee engagement hitting an all-time high this year, according to the Office of Personnel Management’s (OPM) 2024 OPM Federal Employee Viewpoint Survey (FEVS).

OPM published the annual survey results on Thursday afternoon, revealing that the governmentwide Employee Engagement Index (EEI) set a new benchmark high of 73. This marks a one percentage point increase from last year’s survey and the highest EEI score since the introduction of the index to the FEVS in 2010.

“Leaders across the Biden-Harris administration – and managers and supervisors across government – have prioritized rebuilding their workforces and engaging them on the issues most important to them,” OPM Acting Director Rob Shriver said in a statement.

“Now we are seeing the results, with the highest ever score on the Employee Engagement Index, and strong results across the board,” Shriver added. “I’m proud to serve in an administration that not only values its employees, but also knows the work is never done and we always need to keep improving.”

The global satisfaction index, which scores satisfaction with agencies overall, showed a one percentage point increase over 2023 – from 64 percent to 65 percent.

The 2024 FEVS was the third year OPM included the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA) Index, which showed 72 percent of respondents reporting positive perceptions of agency practices related to DEIA. This marked a one percentage point increase from 2023. The overall DEIA Index has increased by three percentage points since 2022 when OPM created the index.

The Performance Confidence Index, which measures employees’ belief that their work unit can achieve goals and produce at a high level, remained consistent at 84 percent.

The Employee Experience Index (EXI), which measures the extent to which employees are engaged by their work and their organization, increased from a score of 73 in 2023 to 74 in 2024.

Nevertheless, some categories saw lower scores from Federal employees in 2024. For example, employees were less satisfied with their pay this year, showing a decrease of one percentage point from 25 percent satisfaction in 2023, to 24 percent in 2024.

This year, FEVS fielding occurred in two waves, beginning on May 13 and ending on July 5. The 2024 governmentwide response rate was 41 percent, an increase from the 2023 response rate of 39 percent.

The FEVS 2024 governmentwide results can be viewed on OPM’s new FEVS public dashboard, which the agency launched in May 2023. This tool provides the public with an innovative way to access the governmentwide and agency-size survey results.
