The Election Infrastructure Government Coordinating Council – whose leadership spans Federal, state, and local government election officials – applauded inter-government cooperation on implementing cybersecurity safeguards in the 2020 election cycle, and pledged to use lessons learned going forward to improve election security and resiliency.
Council leadership said the organization held its winter meeting on Feb. 18 to discuss lessons learned but offered scant details of any particular findings. They said the winter meeting shows that “the election community continues to be unified and committed to working together on election cybersecurity.”
“As the nation faced the worst pandemic in a century, state and local election officials worked to ensure voters could participate safely, while also implementing new and expanded cybersecurity safeguards and countering misinformation and disinformation,” council leadership said. “This required an unprecedented level of coordination between all levels of government.”
Council leadership issuing the statement includes: Bob Kolasky, assistant director of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA); U.S. Election Commission Chairman Ben Hovland; National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS) President Maggie Toulouse Oliver; National Association of State Election Directors (NASED) President Michelle Tassinari; and David Stafford, supervisor of elections for Escambia County, Fla.
