The Defense Department’s Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) is looking to adopt augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) solutions to train soldiers for battlefield nuclear warfare (BNW).

DTRA released a sources sought notice (SSN) on July 2 seeking existing solutions for AR and VR training and testing platforms for troops to use to prepare for nuclear threats. Although AR and VR will not replace field training, the SSN highlighted benefits DTRA identified in AR/VR training.

“Leveraging AR/VR capabilities will increase the ability to train in relevant situations in a reduced cost environment,” the SSN said. “[The] purpose is to test warfighter scenarios and decision-making to provide users realistic outcomes to support training and course-of-action selection when faced with radiological/nuclear threats.”

The SSN listed different technological and technical requirements it seeks in responses, which are due in a limited five-page white paper format by Aug. 12.
