The Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) launched the Department of Defense (DoD) Secure Access File Exchange (SAFE) on Aug. 15, which will provide users with an enterprise-wide ability to safely transfer files in the DoD.

“The service provides exceptional functionality to our active and reserve service members, DoD civil servants, eligible DOD contractor personnel, and even our federal mission partners,” DoD official Brian Hermann said in a DISA blog post. “Now when a DoD team member needs to send or receive a large file, they have a simple and secure method in which to do so.”

The DoD SAFE system is a response to a DoD CIO directive and serves as a replacement for the current U.S. Army Aviation and Missile Research Development and Engineering Center (AMRDEC) Safe Access File Exchange, which will be retired.

In addition to expeditiously transferring files, the new SAFE system will give users access to their files for seven days – as opposed to the AMRDEC’s two-day access.

“[AMRDEC] was never intended to be the enterprise solution for DoD members that it turned into,” Sophie Johnson-Shapoval, a computer engineer with Defense Collaboration Service said. “We’re working with AMRDEC’s team to transition between the two services, and our goal is to provide an even better service.”
