Sen. Angus King, I-Maine, and Rep. Mike Gallagher, R-Wis., co-chairs the Cyberspace Solarium Commission, are seeking cyber professional expertise and input to help the commission tackle significant cybersecurity challenges that the United States and its allies face.

The congressmen wrote in an Aug. 19 Lawfare letter said that the commission will issue “forward looking and prescriptive” recommendations in the spring of 2020 that they hope will push the U.S. to change its “strategic environment in cyberspace, which currently threatens the long-term security and prosperity of the United States.”

The letter highlights difficult cybersecurity challenges and questions that the commission wants to tackle, including:

  • What role public and private sectors play in “securing U.S. information, innovation, and critical infrastructure from malicious cyber activity”;
  • What role the Defense Department plays in the U.S. cyber strategy, particularly when adversarial countries engage in “cyber campaigns that damage the U.S. economy and national security”; and
  • How America and its allies “promote global norms of responsible state behavior in cyberspace.”

The congressmen said that although it the commission has already consulted with academics, experts, and businesses to help it address these questions, it seeks more input from the cyber community at large.

“We need your new ideas, your unique perspectives and your informed insights,” the congressmen write. “Send your solutions, your ideas and your expert referrals to info@solarium.gov.”
