The Office of Management and Budget (OMB) has awarded six agencies across the Federal government with Gears of Government President’s Awards today honoring their innovative contributions to service delivery.
Gears of Government awards are designed to recognize government individuals and teams “whose dedication supports exceptional delivery of key outcomes for the American people, specifically around mission results, customer service, and accountable stewardship.”
This year, OMB honored the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Veterans Health Administration (VHA), Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Department of Defense (DoD), and Department of Justice (DoJ) with President’s Awards. The winning projects spanned across numerous mission areas, including:
- The IRS Tax Reform IT Team’s tech adaptations to more than 140 IT systems and 500 tax products supporting changes put in place by the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act;
- The Electronic Departmental Order Team at DoJ’s firearms appeals process supporting electronic filing that reduced response times by 95 percent and decreased staffing needs by more than 70 percent;
- VHA’s Innovation Ecosystem Team’s contributions to innovative medical care resulting in care for over 120,000 veterans and a $24 million cost reduction;
- Advanced software processing at DoD to maximize operational testing, led by DoD’s James Tipton, that is on track to save $10 million annually in enhanced efficiency;
- The NOAA weather satellite team that restored a visibility defect and saved the $1 billion investment; and
- A streamlined background check system in DHS’s Texas Service Center to establish a more efficient and effective vetting process.
