The U.S. Army is seeking talented soldiers interested in tech product innovation to join the next two cohort of its Army Software Factory (ASWF) organization.
The Army Software Factory – a unit of the Army Futures Command – was launched in early 2021, anticipating future warfare needs for on-site tech operations. The Austin, Texas-based factory provides soldiers and other military members with digital fluency and technology-related skills.
The Army is looking to fill its tenth and eleventh cohorts with active component Army officers, warrant officers, and enlisted soldiers by the close of application windows on Oct. 31, 2024, and March 31, 2025, for start dates of July 10, 2025, and Jan. 10, 2026, respectively.
“We are seeking Soldiers who possess the knowledge, skills, and behaviors, or have a strong interest in software development and cloud engineering, as well as related fields of agile product management, and user interface design,” the ASWF posting reads.
“The program is open to most grades and all occupational specialties and is focused on developing individuals as functioning team members to solve current and future Army problems with technology,” the posting reads.
Participants can choose between four different tracks including product management, UI/UX design, software engineering, and platform engineering.
The program instructs participants on developing software capabilities through three phases over a program lasting two years. The program begins with a six-month technical boot camp, followed by a six-month partnership between participants and subject matter experts. Participants end the program by leveraging applications teams against Army-submitted problems.
The Army listing also notes that participating soldiers must fulfill a 36-month service remaining requirement and must reenlist prior to their permanent change of station to meet the requirement. Additional requirements of the program include participating officers serving three days of service for each day of program training, and all participants completing their technical training within 12 months or face reassignment.
The ASWF program invites 25 participant cohorts every six months, with over 175 participants in the program since its launch. Over two dozen applications developed by the factory have been used by over 46,000 soldiers, according to ASWF.
