The Department of the Navy’s Neptune Cloud Management Office (CMO) launched its first mission owner into the new Flank Speed Azure IL6 cloud environment, and they’re already prepping a second mission owner for takeoff, according to an Aug. 22 announcement on LinkedIn.
The department did not provide additional details regarding the identities of the mission owners.
The Flank Speed Azure IL6 aims to enhance the Department of Defense’s (DoD) capability to foster collaboration and provide service members with access to crucial data. This “self-contained” environment connects to the DoD Secret Internet Protocol Router Network (SIPRNet).
According to the Navy, it utilizes the Azure Government Secret offering to deliver rapid access to sensitive, mission-critical information while ensuring the security and integrity of classified workloads.
“This newly accredited environment delivers fast access to sensitive, mission-critical information while maintaining the security and integrity of classified workloads,” the Navy Program Executive Office for Digital and Enterprise Services (PEO Digital) wrote in the announcement.
“The expansion of secure cloud environments increases the Department’s ability to provide access to critical data, collaborate across geographies, and save money and time through enhanced business operations,” it reads.
Since receiving its initial Authority to Operate in July – alongside the Flank Speed IL5 environment – the team has processed 15 engagement requests via the Neptune portal, with more mission owners joining the initiative.
The Neptune CMO – established in June 2023 by the PEO Digital – serves as the Department of the Navy’s gateway for acquiring and delivering cloud services, providing guidance and support for Pentagon cloud solutions to Navy users.
