Shrinking the Footprint: App Rationalization, Virtualization, and Software Defined Everything

Today’s toolkit for reducing an agency’s data center footprint is far more advanced – and efficient – than it was five years ago at the start of the FDCCI push. Lessons learned across agencies have led to smarter optimization efforts focused around application rationalization, virtualization, and increasingly software defined IT, as a means to the consolidation end. How are these tools changing the way the definition of footprint reduction is perceived? Which optimization trends have the most promise for government entities – Software Defined IT? Infrastructure as a Service? Others? What role will hybrid platforms play as more agencies hurry to merge data center functions in the cloud?
