Carnegie Mellon University has appointed Lorrie Faith Cranor director of its CyLab organization, which functions as a research institute focusing on security and privacy issues including ransomware attacks, network security, and cyber autonomy, among others. Cranor was chief technologist at the Federal Trade Commission in 2016.  At Carnegie Mellon, she is a professor of computer science, engineering, and public policy, and directs the CyLab Usable Privacy and Security Laboratory.
